WHEN TO TRIM NATURAL HAIR

I love that more of us are becoming more health driven as oppose to being all about length.  When it comes to natural hair, healthy tresses always catch my eye.

Here are 5 dead giveaways that let you know that it is time for a trim.

MY MINI TWISTS LOC'D!

Hey girl hey! Today I'm filling you in on why I'm no longer using mini twists as a style for length retention 🙊 + sharing the deets on my current style and the type of hair that I used.  There is a tutorial on how I do the twists, you can watch that here: https://youtu.be/ehhRD0KYj2Y

OLDIES PT. 1

Being online is my job, though I cant totally go cold turkey but I am on a slight social media detox I have also done so much clearing out over the past 2 weeks.

My detox inspired me to go ahead and begin cleaning out my computer files, getting rid of apps that I haven't opened in years and removing pictures that didn't make the cut back in the day.  Over the next few days I will be posting some of my oldies but goodies (IMO)

If the date on my computer is correct, these photos are circa 2012

OMBRÉ TWISTS

It excites me to see that my hair is growing (See previous post) that means the classic formula of leaving my hair alone is working! I removed the faux locs, deep conditioned my hair and rocked it out for about 48hrs.

Yes, I filmed a #NaturalHair video before going back into protective mode. It wasn't a tutorial, more of a take down and "Look how fab my hair turned out" type of video. *Giggles*

Being that I have a love for chunky twists I decided to bring it back. I went a bit lighter this time around, I love it, I feel like a lioness!

10 months of growth. No supplements, just better choices. No heat, no color, minimal manipulation and the use of natural products. I have learned so much about my hair this 2nd big chop round and the process is easier and even more enjoyable. That "ugly duckling" phase that I talked about when I first went natural didn't really exist this time.  Not being afraid to do a little trimming here and there to shape my fro for my face shape. Thankful for that bad relaxer, going natural was one of the best decisions I've made. I can talk about all of the changes I've made in adulthood, I think I will share in a video soon!

I recently shared how I removed my faux locs and did a natural hair update, click here to watch

PERFECT FINGER COILS

I've always read that when doing finger coils it is best to do it on soaking wet hair.  Though the method works, I didn't actually perfect the look until I did just the opposite and coiled on towel dried/damp hair.  The soaking wet method may work for some but for those of you dealing with low porosity hair like myself, it is best to style and apply product to damp/towel dried hair.

In this video, I show you how I achieve my perfect finger coils.

NYE WITH THE GIRLS

This year I will be spending NYE with the girls! I love being in a relationship but one thing that I sort of neglected was time with the girls.  When you're in a relationship holidays and occasions such as NYE is spent being mushy with the other half, with other couples..which is great *back peddling* but it is always great to switch things up and to never forget about your girls!  This year will be full of fabulousness, sparkly things and girls just being girls!

I've partnered with my friend and fabulous style blogger, Tiffany of The Werk! Place to give you a bit of style inspiration for NYE.

SheaMoisture 10-IN-1 RENEWAL SYSTEM

Since cutting my hair, the whole washing and styling process has been a breeze.  Today I used the SheaMoisture Superfruit Complex 10-IN-1 Renewal System for the first time and it was a totally blissful experience, from the amazingly natural fragrance that illuminated as soon as I opened the bottle of shampoo to the gentle lather that formed on my scalp.  I appreciate and applaud SheaMoisture for their ability to create a flawless system, where each product does a superb job and provides exactly what it says it would.  I was rather excited to try it out as this was my first time using a line of products with Marula oil.

Made with certified organic shea butter and other natural ingredients, this powerful system provides anti-aging benefits, heat and color protection, hydration, nourishment, rejuvenation, shine and so much more! When used together, the four products (a shampoo, conditioner, masque, and hair & scalp serum) help to perfect and renew vibrancy due to dull, lackluster hair.

The superfruit blend of red raspberry, ketones, goji, acai, and guava extracts will leave your hair feeling soft and smelling delicious! Learn more by visiting sheamoisture.com.

Pre-wash
Hair and Scalp Serum
Shaking well before opening this serum, I applied it directly onto my scalp and worked it all the way  through to my ends (this was so quick and easy without the extra length to my hair).

A few attributes
  • Revitalizes damaged hair
  • Protects against heat styling
  • Leaves hair soft, smooth and more manageable
Shampoo
I had quite a bit of build up on my scalp from last week's festivities, which required me to lather up, massage in, rinse and lather again (using only about a pea size amount of product)

A few attributes
  • Sulfate Free
  • Improves manageability without creating buildup
  • Nourishes and hydrates hair wile providing anti-aging and color protecting benefits
  • Helps perfect and renew vibrancy to brittle hair
Conditioner
I applied the conditioner and placed a plastic cap over my hair.  I let the conditioner marinate for about 5 minutes, using my fingers I gently removed shed hair and then rinsed.

A few attributes
  • Detangles hair while rejuvenating, leaving hair soft and manageable
  • Provides anti-aging and color protection benefits
  • Hydrates, nourishes and strengthens

* This is my hair after rinsing all of the product out, I had not added any additional product and look how lustrous my coils are-- might I add, my hair was soft and smelled amazing!

I have not gotten down to using the Hair Masque but I plan on using it next week. Be sure to keep up with me on all of my social media platforms so that you don't miss a beat!

THE DOUBLE TOP KNOT

I was reluctant on whether this style was appropriate to wear out but I've come to the conclusion that anything is appropriate as long as you feel good doing it.  I felt super sassy and ultra chic with this look.  Check out my tutorial on it:

FAUX BOB

Every year around the peak of the summer I develop an itch to cut my hair.  Every time I cut my hair I feel regretful of doing so.  4 years ago I had my hair cut in a wedge type shape and loved every moment of it but as I began to grow out I realized that I was able to retain that shape by molding my hair and embracing the shrinkage.  What I feature in the video below is the same technique, only my hair has not been drastically cut that way in so long!'

SUNDAY PREP

Have you ever gotten to a point where your twist outs no longer seem to lay right?  My gosh, I suffer from this problem far too often.  One observation I have made is that my twist-out's don't come out as well when I put way too much time into them.  The parts are ultra visible, twist were made way too tight making the lower portion of the hair look tight while the root is puffy, it almost gives off the apparence of having split ends.  I've realized that my hair looks better when I do my lazy Celie twist with a flexi rod at the end! If you've been natural for a few years, you remember back in the TWA days, the more time you put into your hair the better it seemed to look? As it grows I really see that less is more.  See an example of my easy twist with the flexi-rod at the end in today's Sunday Prep video:

My hair doesn’t like when I use too many products so for this fresh simple style I am using water, Shea Butter throughout my hair and spraying Carol’s Daughter moisturizing conditioner on the ends.  I then applied flexi rods to the ends

YARN TWISTS INSTALLATION + MY LOVE HATE RELATIONSHIP W/ THE STYLE

COLOR'S USED: Black Brown: Red Heart's Toast Yarn / Blonde: Red Heart's Wheat Yarn

It took about 7 hours total to finish my hair, the wrapping was a crazy tedious process, which I don't believe I'd be able to go through again any time soon.  The end product was completely amazing , nonetheless.  Being able to have some lengthy hair laying over my shoulder's felt good.  That is, until it was my run day. . . I've recently gotten into running regularly (which is completely amazing for me because I am far from being a runner) I am so proud of myself for it.  However, figuring out how to style my hair for my run was a pain, finally I got it to stay up in a ponytail.  The ponytail felt like it weighed at least 10lbs.  My poor neck, that was the hardest run ever and guess what. . . these little faux locs were out within 4 8hours later.

I tell you, I am uber excited that I am finally getting into running and I will let nothing hold me back from it, not even that super fabulous hair style.  We may meet again in the future. . .

NOTE:

  • When installing this style, keep in mind the weight of them.  Make sure you grab sections around your hair line that are large enough to hold the wrap.  This isn't the style to stress getting the braid exactly on your scalp, that will definitely cause you some discomfort.
  • Be sure to moisturize your natural hair really well. Use a moisturizer and lock it in with an oil.

WASH & DC DAY

1. Tresseme Deep Cleansing Shampoo & Flawless Curls Conditioner {Washing & Conditioning with these products, these large bottles last forever!} 2. Huetiful Steamer {I only use this about once a month, or every other month, depending on the condition of my hair} 3. Sectioned Hair in 4 Parts {This makes life with natural hair so much easier when it comes to washing, prevents your hair from becoming a tangled mess during the process} 4. Twist & Clipped 4 Sections up {I have clipped the hair up toward the top of my head, still in four sections, to assure that all of my ends are steamed during the treatment} 5. Pick {After steaming, I detangled with this small hair pick} 6. My Curls
